Ralph Reed: GOP Must Cater to Swing Votes

The biggest issues now for most voters are economic rather than social. And evangelical-oriented Republican heavyweight Ralph Reed acknowledges that the GOP must focus on these issues to cater to swing voters, Politico reports.

“In a perfect world, I’d like to hear the Republican [presidential] nominee run on a platform that takes the capital gains tax to zero over five years.”

To be sure, Reed also said at the Faith & Freedom Coalition forum this week that GOP presidential candidates still need to have some focus on social issues to appeal to Christian conservatives. Republican activists “want to have a nominee who thinks that social [issues] shouldn’t ride in the back of the bus,” he said.

Nonetheless, “You run on the issues that voters care about and that the campaign is about,” Reed said.
