Thanks to a dangerous game of "hot potato" between the federal government and local housing authorities across the country, thousands of fugitives are likely living illegally in public housing,
according to a story in the Daily Caller.
Just how many there are nobody knows, but according to the Daily Caller, there were an estimated 1,300 fugitives living in federally funded homes in one region alone in 2012.
Four years later, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has no data to know where they are now, or whether those who have warrants out for rapes, murders and other crimes are still living illegally in public housing.
Though federal law requires fugitives to be evicted from public housing immediately, neither HUD nor the local housing authorities seem to be proactively weeding out criminals, the Daily Caller reported.
HUD says despite federal funding, local housing authorities are "locally owned and operated" and are not under the auspices of HUD, though they're obligated to comply with federal law.
However, the Daily Caller reports local housing authorities say HUD allows them discretion concerning fugitive evictions.
