Abortion foes warmly supported President Donald Trump's nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, the Washington Examiner reported on Wednesday.
"Judge Gorsuch is a distinguished jurist with a strong record of protecting life and religious liberty," said Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser, who also praised a book by him about assisted suicide in which he wrote that the intentional taking of human life is "always wrong."
Americans United for Life President Clarke Forsythe said Gorsuch will be a fitting replacement for former Justice Antonin Scalia, who died last year, leaving a vacancy on the court.
The Catholic-based fraternal organization Knights of Columbus also praised Gorsuch, telling the Washington Examiner: "It is clear that he will interpret the Constitution as it was written, including our First Amendment right to religious freedom, and the right to life of every person. It is hard to imagine a better, and more qualified, candidate."
Politico pointed out that although Gorsuch has never ruled directly on abortion rights, his views appear to conform to Trump's promise to appoint "pro-life" judges.
Indeed, anti-abortion groups said they were very pleased that Gorsuch sided with them in a legal challenge to a requirement from the Obama administration to provide birth control in employee health plans.
Gorsuch wrote in The Hobby Lobby case that the business owners had a right to challenge the requirement, because it unfairly forced them to decide whether to provide contraception, and thus compromise an article of religious faith, or face fines.
Despite the enthusiasm of pro-life groups, however, Gorsuch will not immediately change the Supreme Court balance on the issue, because Scalia was a consistent vote against abortion rights.
However, Politico said that since three justices on the court are over the age of 78, Trump very well might have another opportunity to appoint someone with a conservative outlook to replace a more liberal justice in the future.
