This probably won’t be much of a surprise to anyone living on planet Earth during the past five years, but Americans see the press turning more partisan.
A poll from The Hill of voters in 10 battleground congressional districts shows that 51 percent of likely voters think the media has come to favor one party over the other during the past five years.
That 51 percent breaks down into 30 percent who say the media has turned to favor the Democrats, while only 21 percent say it has turned toward Republicans, confirming what many conservatives have said for years.
The distrust in media created by this partisanship helps explain the explosion of negative campaign ads this year, says Darrell West, director of governance studies at the Brookings Institution.
"It's pretty clear that perceptions of media bias have limited political accountability in this election cycle," West explains. So candidates feel free to say whatever they want in ads.
