Forty-two percent of Americans think President Trump will be remembered as one of the worst presidents in U.S. history, according to a new Marist Poll.
The survey, released Thursday, found 16 percent think Trump will be remembered as a below-average leader, 19 percent think he will be considered an average president, and just a combined 18 percent say Trump will be thought of as either an above-average president (11 percent) or one of the best presidents in history (7 percent).
"Deep into his first year as president, Donald Trump's less than stellar approval rating has lowered expectations about how history will judge him," Lee Miringoff, Director of The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion said in a statement. "For history to treat him kinder, he will have to up his game."
In other results:
- Among Republicans 22 percent said Trump will be remembered as one of the best presidents, 26 percent said he been seen as above average, and 31 percent said his legacy will be as an average president.
- 70 percent of Democratic respondents think Trump will be remembered as one of the worst presidents in history, while another 18 percent of Democrats think Trump will be remembered as a below-average president.
- 60 percent of Independents expect Trump will be remembered as a below-average leader or one of the worst presidents in history.
The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
