President Donald Trump continued his quarrel with California Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown over his immigration policy, blasting his recent decision to pardon five illegal aliens, The Hill reported.
Brown granted a total of 56 pardons on Friday – five for immigrants who were facing possible deportation, The Sacramento Bee reported. Brown's office said most of the pardons he issued were for drug-related or other nonviolent crimes.
Trump slammed the move in his tweet, writing crimes of the "criminal illegal aliens" included "(1) Kidnapping and Robbery (2) Badly beating wife and threatening a crime with intent to terrorize (3) Dealing drugs" and asked, "Is this really what the great people of California want?"
Trump has been at odds with Brown after he rebuffed the president's immigration policy when he signed legislation in October making California a "sanctuary state."
The Trump administration filed a lawsuit earlier this month with the intent of blocking the state's sanctuary laws. Brown took issue with the lawsuit, calling it a "political stunt."
"This is basically going to war against the state of California, the engine of the American economy. It's not wise, it's not right, and it will not stand," Brown said in early March.
Trump, who has made it a practice to give nicknames to political foes, referenced Brown as "Moonbeam," a term first coined in 1976 by Chicago columnist Mike Royko.
