Forty-two percent of Americans now say President Donald Trump should be impeached and removed from office, according to a new CNN poll.

The survey results, released on Friday, also show 51 percent of the 1,012 people polled, do not feel that way.

Still, the number in favor is comparable to the 43 percent who supported the impeachment of President Richard Nixon in a March 1974 Harris poll during the Watergate scandal, CNN noted. Nixon resigned in August 1974.

Here is how the poll breaks down:

  • 9 percent of Republicans favor Trump's impeachment, while 89 percent don't feel that way.
  • 77 percent of Democrats support his impeachment, compared to 16 percent who do not.
  • 38 percent of independents favor Trump's impeachment, while 56 percent do not.

The total number supporting Trump's impeachment surpasses the 29 percent who backed the impeachment of President Bill Clinton in 1998, the news network reported.

CNN noted that most Democratic lawmakers in Congress have not rallied around efforts by Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, to try to impeach Trump.

The poll, conducted by SSRS for CNN, surveyed adults from June 14-17. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.
