Everything is bigger in Texas, and the tight Senate race between incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and surging and well-financed Rep. Beto O'Rourke, D-Texas, just might be the biggest midterm race on the board.
Sen. Cruz leads O'Rourke by 3 points (50-47 percent) in the latest Emerson College poll, but 2 percent of likely voters is still undecided and the results are within the margin of error (3.7 percentage points).
Despite the statistical tie, the RealClear Politics analysis has the Texas Senate race as "leans GOP" and lists Sen. Cruz with a 6.5-point lead in the average of polls. The Emerson poll was the most favorable to O'Rourke.
It has been widely reported O'Rourke has millions more than Sen. Cruz to spend, but as much as it costs in this race, it might be more costly for the Democrat to lose. The Republicans hold a 51-49 Senate majority and need this seat, along with many others in the House to regain control of Congress.
Despite the millions in O'Rourke's campaign war chest, Republicans are still polling more favorably than him:
- President Donald Trump: 49 percent favorable.
- Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas: 51 percent favorable.
- Rep. O'Rourke: 48 percent favorable.
Emerson College polled 781 likely Texas voters between Oct. 28-30, and the poll results have a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.
