Forty-eight percent of voters said it would be wrong for President Donald Trump to fire special counsel Robert Mueller, while 22 percent said it would be appropriate, a new Politico/Morning Consult poll revealed.
Here are the highlights from the survey:
- 37 percent of Republicans say it would be appropriate for Trump to dismiss Mueller, compared to 29 percent who said it would be wrong.
- 11 percent of Democrats said it would be appropriate to fire the special counsel, while 67 percent disagree.
- 19 percent of independents believe it would be appropriate to oust Mueller, compared to 47 percent who said it would be wrong.
- 40 percent of all those polled approve of the way Mueller is handling the Russia investigation, while 27 percent disapprove.
"Forty-eight percent of voters said it would be inappropriate for President Trump to fire Robert Mueller," said Morning Consult Co-founder and Chief Research Officer Kyle Dropp.
"As a comparison, 34 percent of voters thought Trump's decision to fire (FBI Director James) Comey was inappropriate, according to a Politico/Morning Consult survey from May."
The poll, conducted July 20-24, surveyed 3,981 registered voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
