Blumenthal: 'Absolute Firestorm' if Trump Fires Mueller

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., warned that if President Donald Trump fires special counsel Richard Mueller, it will set off "a cataclysmic reaction on both sides of the aisle," on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" Monday.

Trump tweeted Saturday morning that the president has "complete power to pardon," a statement some took issue with.

"My feeling is the better argument is on the side that he lacks that power, to pardon himself," Blumenthal said of the tweet. "And in fact, if he pardons assistants, it could well be regarded as an obstruction of justice, if done for improper reasons. But I feel he lacks the power to pardon himself. You know, he could be pardoning himself for all kinds of crimes that do not even relate to his official duties. And I think there are some limits on the pardon power."

He added, "What would happen if [Trump] fired Bob Mueller? I think there would be an absolute firestorm. A cataclysmic reaction on both sides of the aisle. And I would help to lead efforts to establish legislation to put in place a special prosecutor . . . One thing for sure is, this investigation will not end if the president fires Bob Mueller. It will continue."

Blumenthal later said, "I have suggested repeatedly that the specter of obstruction of justice is becoming more real, with the tweets that are designed to intimidate and threaten the special prosecutor. Because he is engaging, right before our eyes, in real time, in efforts to threaten the special prosecutor by raising this issue of conflict of interest. And possibly going after him."
