President Donald Trump's proposed cuts to various social programs in favor of defense spending goes against the majority of American's desires, according to the latest Quinnipiac University poll released Friday.

Although most voters support more funding to veteran's health services, at 85 percent, and Trump's call for increased military spending, at 58 percent, they do not support the cuts he proposed.

The results:

  • 87 percent oppose cuts to medical research.
  • 84 percent oppose cuts to new road and transit projects.
  • 83 percent oppose cuts to after/summer school programs.
  • 79 percent oppose doing away with the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.
  • 67 percent oppose cuts to research on climate change and the environment.
  • 66 percent oppose the elimination of the National Endowments of the Arts and Humanities.

"It's a rousing yes for healing the vets and growing the military. But when it comes to cutting Public TV, the arts, after school programs and scientific research to improve the environment, it's a stern 'hands off from voters,'" said Tim Malloy, Quinnipiac University Poll assistant director.

Budget expert Kim S. Rueben from the Tax Policy Center, a nonpartisan institution, told The New York Times that Trump's proposal actually goes against his campaign promise to bring jobs to the Midwest and rural areas.

"It just seems like you're going after places that are so pivotal to what you are arguing you wanted to do for your base," Rueben said.

"They're cutting all sorts of infrastructure projects and economic development projects at the same time that the president is still talking about how much of an investment he's going to put into infrastructure."

Quinnipiac surveyed 1,056 voters across the nation from March 16-21, with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points.
