Democrat Hillary Clinton holds a 9-point lead over Republican Donald Trump in the most recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released on Thursday – and she retains that margin even when the Libertarian and Green parties' candidates are included.
Strikingly, Libertarian Gary Johnson scored 10 percent support in the four-way race.
According to the poll of registered voters, here are their choices:
- Clinton: 47 percent
- Trump: 38 percent
With Johnson and Green Party candidate Jill Stein included:
- Clinton: 43 percent
- Trump: 34 percent
- Johnson: 10 percent
- Stein: 5 percent
One month ago, Clinton led Trump by only 5 points in the same poll: 46 percent to 41 percent.
Clinton's advantages are with women (51 percent to 35 percent), African Americans (91 percent to 1 percent), all non-white voters (69 percent to 17 percent), young voters (46 percent to 34 percent) and white voters with a college degree (47 percent to 40 percent.)
Trump, meanwhile, is stronger with white voters (45 percent to 40 percent), senior citizens (46 percent to 43 percent), independents (36 percent to 32 percent) and white voters without a college degree (49 percent to 36 percent.)
They are statistically tied with men (43 percent for Clinton, 42 percent for Trump.)
Trump's 9-point deficit this early in the race is significant compared to previous election years, according to NBC News.
In 2008, then-Sen. Barack Obama was did not lead Sen. John McCain by 7 points until late October. And in 2012, Obama never hit nine points.
