Republicans are more likely to say that a man in elected office would do a better job than a woman when it comes to key issues, a new Politico/Morning Consult poll reveals.
Here is how the poll breaks down:
- 34 percent of GOP voters say a man would do a better job addressing a terrorist attack; 3 percent a woman would and 61 percent say it would not make a difference either way.
- 14 percent of Democrats say a man would do a better job dealing with a terrorist attack; 8 percent say a woman would and 73 percent say gender would not make a difference.
- 16 percent of independents say a man would do a better job addressing a terrorist attack; 5 percent say a woman would and 71 percent say it makes no difference.
- 18 percent of Republicans say a man would do a better job dealing with a school shooting; 10 percent say a woman would and 70 percent say it makes no difference.
- 5 percent of Democrats say a man would do a better job in addressing a school shooting; 22 percent say a woman; and 69 percent say it makes no difference.
- 8 percent of independents say a man would do a better job dealing with a school shooting; 15 percent say a woman would and 68 percent say it makes no difference.
- 15 percent of Republicans prefer a male candidate; 2 percent favor a female candidate and 80 percent say it does not make a difference.
- 4 percent of Democrats favor a male candidate; 15 percent prefer a female candidate and 79 percent say it does not make a difference.
5 percent of independents prefer a male candidate; 6 percent favor a female candidate and 82 percent say it does not make a difference.
Politico noted 601 women have filed or are expected to run for the House, Senate or governor.
The poll, conducted May 22-29, surveyed 1,993 registered voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.
