Sixty-seven percent of American voters say obtaining funding for the Children's Health Insurance Program is potentially important enough to shut down the government, according to a Politico/Morning Consult poll.
The program provides low-cost health insurance for kids in families with low and moderate incomes.
Asked if the issue was vital enough to shut down the government, 42 percent said "yes, definitely;" 25 percent replied "yes, maybe;" 12 percent answered "no, maybe" and 11 percent say they were against it completely.
The Hill noted Congress let funding for the program run out on Sept. 30. Since then state officials have been looking for money to keep their programs operational and provide about nine million children with health insurance.
The poll, conducted Dec. 1-3, surveyed 1,997 registered voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 percent.
