About six out of 10 Democratic voters believe that primaries should be open to anyone who wants to vote in them, regardless of party affiliation, according to an NBC News/SurveyMonkey poll.

Among Democrats who took the poll:
  • 63 percent of Democrats said the Democratic primaries should be open to any voter.
  • 35 percent of Democrats said the Democratic primaries should only be open to Democrats.
Among Republicans who took the poll:
  • 52 percent of Republicans said the Republican primaries should be open to any voter.
  • 47 percent of Republicans said the Republican primaries should only be open to Republicans.
Those who took the poll were also asked if they believed the process of selecting a presidential nominee was fair. According to the results, 59 percent of both Republicans and Democrats approve of the fairness of the process.

Rules vary state by state as to whether primaries are open or closed to only those who are affiliated to the primary's party.

A report in the New York Times about the primary process revealed that top leaders in both parties, President Obama and Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus, believe that the primary process is fair.

The online NBC/Survey Monkey poll was conducted nationwide between May 30 and June 5, with 10,520 adults over 18, including 9,240 who said they were registered to vote.
