New York state voters approve 52-31 percent of the job Gov. Andrew Cuomo is doing — but most say he would not make a good president, a new Quinnipiac University poll reveals.

Here are the survey highlights:

  • 52 percent of those surveyed in New York say he would not make a good president, while 37 percent say he would.
  • 57 percent say Cuomo should become a national leader and challenge the policies of the Trump administration, while 38 percent disagree.
  • 29 percent of those polled in the state approve of President Donald Trump’s job performance, while 67 percent disapprove.

"Use the bully pulpit against President Donald Trump, Governor, but stay out of Washington — that's the mixed message that New Yorkers have for Gov. Andrew Cuomo," said Maurice Carroll, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University poll.

"Most of his neighbors tell their Governor that he should be a national leader against Trump, and if he is, it will be good for New York," Carroll added.

"But — for now, at least — New York State voters don't think Gov. Cuomo would be a good President and they tell him not to run. Every politician in the state thinks he's already running, so he's not likely to obey voters' advice."

Here is how the rest of the New York poll breaks down:

  • 58 percent approve of the way Sen. Chuck Schumer is handling his job, compared to 34 percent who disapprove.
  • 56 percent approve of Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's job performance, while 22 percent disapprove.

Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,446 New York voters from March 23-27 with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.
