Poll: Majority of Americans Say Taxes Are Too High

By    |   Monday, 21 August 2017 11:24 AM EDT

A majority of Americans believe their taxes are too high and 57 percent say the tax code needs to be overhauled, according to a new poll from the American Action Network.

Here are the highlights from the survey:

  • 62 percent of Republicans, 46 percent of Democrats and 49 percent of independents believe their taxes are too high.
  • 90 percent said the personal income tax system is very complex or somewhat complex.
  • 80 percent said Democrats in Congress should work with Republicans to get things done.
  • 59 percent said Democrats in Congress should work with President Donald Trump to get things done.
  • 77 percent said business tax reform will impact them directly as a result of economic growth.

The poll comes as the Trump administration and Congress are about to shift their attention to tax reform, The Washington Free Beacon noted.

"It's clear that Americans, regardless of ideology, widely support fixing our broken tax system," said Corry Bliss, director of the AAN, the Free Beacon reported. "Americans recognize the positive impact a tax code with lower rates would have on working families and small businesses competing with other countries like China."

The poll for AAN was conducted by GS Strategy Group. One thousand registered voters were surveyed from Aug. 1-3. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 percent.
