Politico: 99 Democrat House Seats Up for Grabs

The numbers continue to mount against Democrats. On the same day that NBC reported more than 100 Democratic House seats are in play, Politico puts the number at 99.

The non-partisan Cook Political Report sees Republicans adding at least 40 House seats to their side of the ledger, with 90 Democratic seats rated as competitive or likely Republican. The GOP needs just 39 more seats to reclaim a majority in the House.

"When Chairman [Pete] Sessions and Minority Leader [John] Boehner said that 100 House seats were in play, Democrats scoffed,” says Ken Spain, the National Republican Congressional Committee’s communications director. “Today, they aren't laughing anymore."

Economic and social issues are working against Democrats.

“This year is shaping up to be something of a repeat of the 52-seat House and eight-seat Senate rout of Democrats in 1994,” star analyst Charlie Cook writes. “Sure, the circumstances and dynamics are different from then, but the outcome seems to be shaping up along the same lines.”
