Phyllis Schlafly, whose nickname is the "Iron Lady" of conservatism, has endorsed the Republican primary challenger to Arizona Sen. John McCain.
According to the
Independent Journal Review, Schlafly is backing Dr. Kelli Ward in the Arizona Senate race. The 79-year-old McCain has served in the Senate since 1987.
Ward, a physician, served in the Arizona State Senate starting in 2013 but resigned last December to focus on her U.S. Senate run.
"I am profoundly honored to have Phyllis Schlafly's support. She is truly the matriarch of the conservative movement," Ward told the Independent Journal Review.
"She and conservatives all across America are excited about the surging strength of this campaign. They know from my background as a mother, military wife, and family doctor that I will be a conservative champion for Arizona. As Ronald Reagan said conservatives win with 'bright, bold colors' not 'pale pastels.' I will finally fix the VA and mix the mortar to fix the border."
Last fall,
Schlafly told Newsmax TV people don't trust Hillary Clinton, the leading Democrat in the race for president.
