The firing of FBI agent Peter Strzok is "long overdue," said Reps. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., and Mark Meadows, R-N.C. on Monday.
McCarthy, the House majority leader, simply tweeted "long overdue."
"Peter Strzok was fired because of what his own text messages plainly showed: He was willing to use his official FBI position to try and stop President Trump from getting elected," Meadows, the leader of the House Freedom Caucus, tweeted. "His firing is long overdue."
The FBI fired Strzok on Friday, Strzok's lawyer Aitan Goelman confirmed Monday.
President Donald Trump repeatedly criticized Strzok over texts between Strzok and former agency lawyer Lisa Page during the 2016 presidential campaign.
In July, Strzok told members of the House Oversight and Judiciary Committees his work on special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian interference was not biased by his Trump opinions.
Trump himself also weighed in on Strzok's firing.
"Agent Peter Strzok was just fired from the FBI — finally," Trump tweeted. "The list of bad players in the FBI & DOJ gets longer & longer. Based on the fact that Strzok was in charge of the Witch Hunt, will it be dropped? It is a total Hoax. No Collusion, No Obstruction – I just fight back!"
Other congressmen agreed with Strzok's firing.
"The firing of anti-Trump FBI agent Peter Strzok is welcome, if overdue," Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., tweeted. "By exhibiting such rampant bias, Strzok did enormous damage to the FBI and to the country."
"There's no place for someone like Peter Strzok at the FBI: Don't let the door hit ya on the way out. Sayonara," tweeted Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif.
Other conservative commentators also registered their approval.
"Should have happened a long time ago," former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski said.
"One suspects that, if you're as creepy as Peter Strzok, it's hard to polish up your resume," former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said.
