CNN Political Chief: Of Course Strzok Showed Bias in Texts

Embattled FBI agent Peter Strzok drew fire from CNN on Thursday, with the network's political director saying he should have been more careful with his text messaging habit.

CNN political director David Chalian had this to say about Strzok, who faced tough questions from members of two House committees on Thursday:

"You should put nothing in text or email that you are not comfortable seeing on the front page of The New York Times or on CNN's banner across the bottom of the screen," Chalian said. "He didn't follow that rule, so now he's in this position."

Chalian then pushed back on Strzok's insistence he did not have bias against then-candidate Donald Trump when he was working on the Russia investigation in its early days during the 2016 presidential campaign.

"Strzok's mission [Thursday] is try to walk this line of 'I have personal political views, it didn't impact my work at all,'" Chalian said. "That may be true, but when he says that those texts [are] 'not indicative of bias,' that's just flat wrong on its face. It is indicative of bias."

Several Republican members of the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees grilled Strzok during a lengthy hearing. Some of them accused him of having an anti-Trump bias when he was investigating Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server and alleged connections between Trump and Russia.

Strzok briefly worked on the special counsel investigation into Trump-Russia collusion before he was let go after text messages between him and an FBI lawyer that showed anti-Trump attitudes were discovered.
