It might help President Donald Trump in the public eye if he meets with special counsel Robert Mueller to answer questions about Russia and the 2016 election, but as a legal matter, it's hard to tell the purpose a meeting would hold, Rep. Pete King said Monday.
"As a legal matter I don't know what the purpose is unless there is a question that only the president can answer," the New York Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "I would think that Bob Mueller must have all the information he could possibly need...I don't know what the president would add to it."
If Mueller does have areas only the president can answer, his team should let the president's personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani and his other lawyers know what the focus will be, King added.
He said he also thinks it is "unconstitutional" to examine Trump's motives if he asked then-FBI DIrector James Comey to "take it easy" on former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, a conversation Giuliani over the weekend denied.
Giuliani has said if the sit-down interview does not happen before Sept. 1, it will disturb the midterm elections. However, the special counsel does have the option to subpoena Trump, but that could drag on for months, King said.
"You can have a debate among constitutional lawyers," he said. "This is an issue that would go to the Supreme court. One way or the other it would put this off well into next year."
