Rep. Pete King, R-N.Y., joined President Donald Trump in denouncing former White House adviser Steven Bannon over statements attributed to Bannon in a new book.
"President Trump did absolutely the right thing yesterday in denouncing Steve Bannon — a self-promoting con man who should disappear from the political scene or find a job in the circus.," King said in a statement issued late Wednesday.
King noted he was one of the first to call on Trump to fire Bannon in August — "not just for his increasingly bizarre views, but for undermining the President on key national security issues such as North Korea and leaking against Administration policies as part of his constant attempt to grab power."
King also noted that he strongly attacked Bannon for backing former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore over Sen. Luther Strange in the GOP special election primary in Alabama. King also has criticized Bannon for attacking Mitt Romney religious beliefs and for mocking Trump's daughter Ivanka for saying child sexual abusers deserve a special place in hell.
In December, King told CNN that Bannon "looks like some drunk that wandered on to the national stage" based on his disheveled appearance.
"Bannon is not a conservative," King said. "He is an unhinged, overly ambitious fraud with no regard for human decency or basic loyalty," and, "Whether or not you support President Trump, he was 100% corrrect in casting Steve Bannon into the wilderness."
