Buttigieg: I'd Tell Trump Backers He 'Thinks You're a Sucker'

(MSNBC's "Morning Joe")

Presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg said Tuesday, if he had just five minutes with every person who showed up at President Donald Trump's rally in New Hampshire on Monday night, he would tell them all, the "president thinks you're a sucker."

"[I'd say], 'he thinks you're not going to notice that the only economic promise he's actually kept is cutting taxes on corporations and the wealthy," the former South Bend, Indiana, mayor, who pulled out a hairline victory over Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., in last week's Iowa caucuses, told MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

"He thinks you're not going to notice that manufacturing is in recession. He thinks you're not going to notice that he put out a budget [Monday], the same day he came here into New Hampshire, cutting education, cutting environmental protection, but not just that, he's opened the door to cutting Social Security and Medicaid and Medicare, the very things he swore up and down to protect."

Trump's presidency, Buttigieg told the program, has divided the country while breaking "promise after promise."

He added a president will always have a base, but still "there is a powerful American majority" that wants to see the country move in a different direction."

Buttigieg's numbers have not been good so far among voters of color, but he said the support is growing, and "no one is feeling the pain" more of living under Trump's administration.

"As we engage with Latino voters especially, but not only in Nevada, as we reach out to black voters in the south, I know how many have a laser focus on making sure that we defeat Donald Trump," Buttigieg said. "Numbers are jumping around. Many are taking a second look at candidates, now that we've gotten past the phase where there's about 20 of us, and really down to the wire where there's a handful of options.

"I want to make sure black voters, Latino voters, and others across the country know that I will not write any vote off, and I will not take anyone for granted," he concluded.
