Fla. Gov. Scott: Social Security Position Won't Hurt Perry

By    |   Wednesday, 14 September 2011 02:38 PM EDT

Some politicos contend that Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry’s strong criticism of Social Security will hurt him on the campaign trail. But Republican Florida Gov. Rick Scott isn’t one of them.

"I don't think it's a problem," Scott said on MSNBC. "I think everybody realizes it's an issue that we have to deal with. It's no different than what the states do with the pension — what the cities and counties do with their pensions. Everybody knows all these retirement plans, we've got to make sure that they're funded."

Views on Social Security won’t determine which candidate gets nominated, Scott said. And either Perry or Mitt Romney could beat President Barack Obama in Florida, he said.

"I think both of them would win Florida in a general,” Scott said. “I think they both are focused on jobs."
