Romney Avoids Direct Conflict With Perry

Texas Gov. Rick Perry may present presumptive Republican front-runner Mitt Romney with his strongest opponent in the presidential nomination contest. But the former Massachusetts governor is trying to remain above the fray with his new challenger, hoping to outlast him, Politico reports.


Since Perry entered the race Saturday, Romney’s biggest attack against him was telling reporters that his own work in the private sector would help him handle the economy better than Perry. Instead of focusing on the Texas governor, Romney continues to go after President Barack Obama.


“Mitt Romney considers Rick Perry a friend and believes he will add a lot to the discussion during the primary,” said Romney’s communications director, Gail Gitcho. “He is going to stay the course and keep his focus on President Obama’s failed economic policies. This country needs a president who understands how the economy works and has private sector experience. That is why Mitt Romney is running.”
