Perry, Bachmann Lead Wide-Open SC Race

By    |   Tuesday, 30 August 2011 04:20 PM EDT

South Carolina represents a key primary in the GOP presidential race, as it’s scheduled to be the fourth state to vote. Although Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Rep. Michele Bachmann lead the pack there, the state is very much in play, heavyweight Republicans tell The Hill.

They say former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman have a good chance too. “I think South Carolina is very, very wide open,” said Van Hipp, former chairman of the state Republican Party. “Perhaps more than I’ve ever seen before.”

The winner of South Carolina’s primary, scheduled for Feb. 28, has gone on to capture the presidential nomination since its start in 1980.

One key factor in the Palmetto State could be an endorsement from Gov. Nikki Haley, who says she’ll announce whom she supports before the primary.
