Vice President Mike Pence is the unifying force in the White House whose muted, humble presence has kept him in good standing with President Donald Trump, Axios reports.
Several of Pence's attributes have kept him on Trump's good side and away from the scandals and allegations that have dogged the administration since inauguration day last year.
Pence, for example, is mostly a yes man who does not offend or challenge Trump all that much in private — and never in public or when others are present. He also has his own team of people who are loyal to him and who do their jobs quietly without causing any distractions, Axios reports.
As for Pence being humble, Axios reported that he told a group of Republicans at a retreat that he works in "the Joseph A. Bank wing of the West Wing" — a direct reference to the expensive suits Trump owns due to his wealth.
Foreign leaders also have confidence that Pence speaks for the administration, which was reportedly not the case with former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
Pence has also traveled frequently this year to campaign for Republicans running in the midterm elections, trips that have not garnered all that much national attention but have certainly created media attention at the local level.
Some friction may have occurred recently between Trump and Pence, however, when Trump tried to block his No. 2's pick to serve as his national security adviser.
Jon Lerner currently works as UN Secretary Nikki Haley's deputy and was chosen by Pence to serve in the aforementioned West Wing role. But Lerner did some anti-Trump work during the 2016 presidential campaign, which promoted Trump to try to stop his nomination. That led to Lerner withdrawing his name from consideration.
Pence traveled to South America last weekend and is slated to fly to Brazil for meetings with government officials there at the end of May.
