Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe are making a series of weekend trips to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, and New York to urge Democratic Party donors to focus on funding for state and local elections, according to USA Today.

Their plan is to focus on the governors who will be the overseers of redistricting when the 2020 Census happens. Pelosi and McAuliffe also are calling on donors for legal challenges to gerrymandering of congressional districts, USA Today notes.

"I don't care who the president of the United States is. It doesn't matter in the sense that, if we don't have governors to stop these horrible maps, they're going to pass a lot of this stuff at the state level," McAuliffe told the newspaper, adding that he experienced the effects of gerrymandering in his own state and he broke an all-time veto record blocking a defunding of Planned Parenthood and a requirement for voters to fax their driver's license to get an absentee voter ballot.

Only 16 governors in the U.S. are Democrats and during President Barack Obama's presidency, the party lost more than 900 state legislative seats.

Meanwhile, Republican Party donors have focused on down-ballot candidates and state laws that loosen gun restrictions and add restrictions against organization of labor unions, USA Today notes.

Donald Trump's presidency is bringing some of those issues to the federal level, McAuliffe told USA Today, and "now our back is against the wall . . . I don't say this lightly, but the future of our party comes down to these governor's elections.

"If we do not do well with these governor's races, our party as we know it will be out of the game for a decade. There will be so much damage done at the state level," he added.

Pelosi told the newspaper: "One of the most important things we can do electorally is to have more fairness in our system . . . This isn't about us getting in charge and letting us do what they did to us. It's about our country."

McAuliffe added: "All we want are fair lines."

Pelosi and McAuliffe are promoting the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, chaired by Eric Holder, the former U.S. attorney general under Obama.

Obama, earlier in July, headlined a fundraiser for the committee, according to The Chicago Sun-Times.
