House Speaker Paul Ryan on Monday said special counsel Robert Mueller is "anything but" a "biased partisan."

A guest on Wisconsin radio's "The Jay Weber Show," Ryan was asked why Republicans aren't doing more to "protect their" President Donald Trump against Mueller's "witch hunt" investigation into possible collusion with Russia.

"I don't think many people are saying Bob Mueller is a person who's a biased partisan. He's really sort of anything but," Ryan told Weber.

Though many people may not be saying it, Trump says it repeatedly.

"The point is, we have an investigation in the House, we have an investigation in the Senate and a special counsel, which sort of de-politicizes this stuff; gets it out of the political theater and I think that is better to get this off to the side," Ryan told Weber.

Let Mueller do his job — it's a point Ryan has made before.

"Remember, Bob Mueller is a Republican appointed by a Republican who served in a Republican administration and stayed on until his term ended," Ryan said.

But most of all, Ryan said the Russia probe is a time-suck that's better left for a party outside of Congress so that Republicans can focus on serving people.

"The frustrating things for House members is, it's Russia-this, Russia-that, it's tweet-this, tweet-that. It's wall-to-wall coverage and countdown clocks of what I would call distracting issues, and not the issues we're actually focused on," Ryan told Weber.
