Retiring House Speaker Paul Ryan didn't waste any time rejecting speculation that he'll be pushed out early by members of his own party, the Washington Examiner reports.
"I've talked to a lot of members who think it is in our best interest for me to stay here and run through the tape,” Ryan said Thursday, the Examiner reported.
Not even 24 hours out from his Wednesday retirement announcement, Ryan was responding to questions about reports that quickly surfaced that he would be forced out early by Republicans who are antsy to move on before November's midterms.
Ryan brushed that off as coming from a handful of Republicans. Besides, the Wisconsin Republican is a prolific fundraiser who has transferred tens of millions into GOP coffers.
"I have shattered every fundraising record any Speaker has ever set," the Examiner quoted Ryan. "It makes no sense to take the biggest fundraiser off the field and most of our members agree with that."
