Paul Ryan: House GOP Must 'Go Big' to Deliver on Trump, 'Better Way' Agenda

By    |   Tuesday, 15 November 2016 12:21 PM EST

House Republicans plan to "hit the ground running" in January in hopes of delivering on President-elect Donald Trump's agenda, so they'll be ready when he is inaugurated as the 45th president on Jan. 20, House Speaker Paul Ryan said Tuesday.

"Welcome to the dawn of a new unified Republican government," Ryan, surrounded by House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and several other GOP lawmakers, said during a press conference following a meeting with the House Republican Conference.

"This will be a government focused on turning President-elect Trump's victory into real progress for the American people. Our team is very excited, and we cannot wait to get to work."

The House Republican leadership elections will be held Tuesday afternoon, and with Ryan's voice of support for Trump, plus with the new president-elect's official backing, Ryan is likely to serve a second term as speaker.

House Democrats, though, said Tuesday they'll postpone their vote for minority leader until after Thanksgiving, reports Fox News, while doubts swirl about California Rep. Nancy Pelosi's continued leadership role.

Ryan, meanwhile, told the press Tuesday that Republicans will have to "go big" to put the United States "back on the right track."

"In the days and weeks ahead, we will be working very closely with the president-elect and his transition team to lay out our ambitious path for 2017," said Ryan. "That team, of course, is led by Vice President-elect Mike Pence, and it includes several of our own members.

"So we are working hand-in-glove from the start . . . a better way, and better days, lie ahead for our country."

Ryan said, while touting his "Better Way" policy agenda, that the House will send its components quickly to Trump's desk, and he's speaking with the president-elect "virtually every single day."
