Donald Trump won his race for the GOP nomination "fair and square," House Speaker Paul Ryan said in an interview airing Sunday, while dismissing efforts to block the New Yorker from accepting the nomination formally at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland in July.
“Seventeen people competed, one person won and he got the delegates, Ryan told ABC's George Stephanopoulos in an interview to air on the
"This Week" program. “The delegates ultimately decide these things, but he won fair and square."
Ryan has endorsed Trump, but has continued to criticize him, including denouncing his comments about U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel, the judge presiding over the lawsuit against Trump University.
However, the House speaker says he and Trump share common ground on many issues, and will work to defeat Hillary Clinton.
