Quran-Burning Florida Pastor Announces Presidential Run

By    |   Thursday, 27 October 2011 12:47 PM EDT

Terry Jones, the Florida pastor who caused an international uproar when he announced a “Burn a Quran Day,” now says he is running for president.

The limelight-loving preacher announced his White House bid Wednesday through his website, Stand Up America Now.

“Please financially support us as we continue our stand against radical Islam,” Jones said in a news release posted on the site.

Jones, who has a small, nondenominational church in Gainesville, made headlines last year when he announced he would burn thousands of copies of the Muslim holy book on Sept. 11, 2010, which he dubbed “Burn a Quran Day.”

Public figures from President Barack Obama to Gen. David Petraeus urged Jones to desist, warning that destroying Qurans could put Americans at risk. Jones eventually agreed, then went ahead with the stunt in March anyway.

Jones did not say whether he would run as an independent or under a party wing. He listed a seven-point platform that includes No. 1, “Stop overspending immediately” and No. 4, “Deport all illegals.”
