In results Wednesday that jolted Nebraska Republicans, a just-completed FM3 Research poll of the Cornhusker State's 2nd District (Omaha) showed Democratic challenger Kara Eastman taking the lead over Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., for the first time.
According to the poll, non-profit founder Eastman leads two-term incumbent Bacon 47% to 45%. FM3 Research conducted the poll for the CPC PAC and surveyed 450 likely voters from Oct. 1-4. The survey has a margin of error of 4.6 percentage points.
These figures represent a steady climb for Eastman, a member of the Metropolitan Community College Board of Governors. Two years ago, she lost a tight contest to Bacon 51%-49%. In late September of this year, The New York Times showed her trailing Bacon 45%-43%.
Explaining why the Democrat suddenly shifted to the lead, several Nebraska Republicans pointed out to Newsmax the city of Omaha that is the bulk of the 2nd District has seen its minority population growing in the last two decades. Barack Obama carried the 2nd District in '08 and several polls have shown Joe Biden leading President Trump.
The 2nd District has had a Republican U.S. Representative for all but six of the past 40 years. Former U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Bacon first won the district in 2016 by taking out then-Rep. Brad Ashford, D-Neb.
