Ohio Senate Race Draws More Outside Money Than Any Other in Nation

By    |   Wednesday, 22 August 2012 01:55 PM EDT

Ohio may be ground zero in determining which party has control of the Senate next year, and that’s why more outside money has come into the Buckeye state’s Senate race than into any other.

Super PACs and other outside groups have spent more than $14 million so far in the contest between incumbent Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown and Republican state Treasurer Josh Mandel. Spending on behalf of Mandel has dwarfed that on behalf of Brown, according to figures from The Associated Press.

Crossroads GPS and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce have shelled out more than $11 million in advertising against Brown and plan to put in almost $7 million more before Election Day, The Washington Times reports.

Meanwhile, liberal environmental, labor, and other groups have allocated only $3.1 million for attack ads against Mandel.

Overall, the Brown side has taken in $15 million, compared to $10 million for the Mandel camp.

An Aug. 13 Rasmussen Reports poll shows the candidates tied at 44 percent, while Real Clear Politics rates the race as leaning toward Brown.
