Two Republicans who were vital in getting the Obamacare repeal bill passed in the House last year are in danger of losing their seats in Tuesday's midterm elections, Vox reported Monday.
Tom MacArthur in New Jersey’s 3rd District and Fred Upton in Michigan’s 6th didn’t just vote for the repeal of Obamacare; they also brought fringe lawmakers on board after introducing amendments that helped the bill pass, Vox reported.
MacArthur, who was first elected in 2014 and won reelection by 20 points in 2016, is running against Democrat Andy Kim, a former White House counterterrorism official under President Barack Obama who has repeatedly attacked MacArthur, because he “wrote a bill to gut protections for people with preexisting conditions.”
Upton, who was first elected in 1992 and won reelection by more than 20 points in 2016, is up against Democrat Matt Longjohn, who was formerly the YMCA’s national medical director.
Left-leaning groups supporting Longjohn have gone on the air attacking Upton for “leading the charge” on rolling back protections for preexisting conditions.
Although Upton is the favorite - he has represented his district for 25 years and outspent Longjohn throughout the year - health care has been an important enough issue in the midterms that it could cause his downfall, according to Vox.
