By    |   Monday, 10 July 2017 02:32 PM EDT

Fifty-two percent of Americans say it would be better to leave Obamacare alone until a deal is reached on how to change it, while only 41 percent agree with President Donald Trump that it would be better to repeal Obamacare now and fix it later if changes cannot be agreed upon, according to a survey released by Rasmussen Reports on Monday.

Most Americans want Obamacare retained under these circumstances even though only 27 percent consider it a success, while 38 percent call it a failure and 34 percent say it is somewhere in between.

Other results of the poll show:

  • Among Republicans, 66 percent prefer Obamacare repealed now and fixes made later, while 28 percent prefer it be left alone until an agreement is reached on how to change it.
  • Among Democrats, only 15 percent prefer Obamacare repealed now and changes made later, while 82 percent said it should be left alone until a deal is reached on how to fix it.
  • Among independents, 47 percent said it is better for Obamacare to be repealed now and fixes made later, while 43 percent prefer it be left alone until an agreement is reached on how to change it.
  • Independents almost exactly reflected the overall percentages for how Obamacare is considered, with 25 percent calling it a success, 38 percent a failure and 35 percent said it is somewhere in between.

The survey of 1,000 likely U.S. voters was conducted on July 5. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points with a 95 percent level of confidence.
