President Barack Obama will name Ernest Moniz as head of the Energy Department and Gina McCarthy as head of the Environmental Protection Agency, according to a White House official who requested anonymity in advance of a formal announcement.
Moniz is a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he heads the Laboratory for Energy and Environment and the MIT Energy Initiative. McCarthy is an assistant administrator at the EPA, where she leads the Office of Air and Radiation.
Moniz will succeed Steven Chu at the Energy Department. The previous EPA adminstrator, Lisa Jackson, resigned last month.
