Former President Barack Obama recorded three online ads in support of Raphael Warnock, a Democrat running in the Jan. 5 Georgia U.S. Senate runoff.

"If we want Joe Biden to succeed in tackling this virus and getting folks back to work, we need Raphael Warnock in the Senate," Obama said in one digital ad, per The Hill.

Warnock will oppose Sen. Kelly Loeffler, R-Ga., and Jon Ossoff will challenge Sen. David Perdue, R-Ga., in the runoff that will determine which party will hold a majority in the upper chamber of Congress.

The ex-president invoked the name of John Lewis in one ad. The former Georgia congressman and civil rights leader died in July.

"John Lewis wrote that 'Democracy is not a state. It is an act.' Georgia, the time to act is now," Obama said. "Let's send Raphael Warnock to the Senate to make progress for all of us."

More than $450 million already has been spent on ad reservations for the runoff, according to tracking firm AdImpact.

Earlier this week, President-elect Joe Biden appeared in a campaign ad urging Georgians to vote for Warnock and Ossoff.

Obama visited Georgia the day before the Nov. 3 election in which Biden won the state.

Republicans currently hold a 50-48 advantage in the Senate. If Warnock and Ossoff win, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris would be able to cast tiebreaking votes.
