With former Vice President Joe Biden holding a lead over President Donald Trump in the race for the White House, one CNN analysis concluded that Trump still has a strong chance of winning reelection.

Harry Enten wrote for CNN that Trump merely needs to pick up a few percentage points here and there to erase Biden's lead ahead of the election — which is five and a half months away.

"It's important to point out that even if the polls are an accurate representation of the current state of the race, presidential races can shift a lot during the final six months of the campaign," Enten wrote.

"Biden may be favored, but this race is far from over."

Enten then examined the data from 13 previous presidential elections that included an incumbent dating back to 1940. The numbers show that Biden's lead — he holds an advantage of just under 5 percentage points, according to the RealClear Politics polling average — is not large enough to declare he is the clear favorite to win.

What Trump needs to do, Enten concluded, is pick up 8 points. And if he only swings the polls 3 or 4 points in his favor, he would have a strong chance of winning another term despite potentially losing the national popular vote.
