Following Kelly's Departure, Nielsen Expected to Be Forced Out

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen will be forced out now that White House Chief of Ctaff John Kelly is leaving, former DHS officials told the Washington Examiner.

The speculation comes due to the close ties between Nielsen and Kelly, with Nelson having helped prepare Kelly for his confirmation hearing to lead DHS at the start of last year and then herself going to work for the department.

After Kelly left DHS last summer, Nielsen became the department’s head at Kelly's recommendation.

Many had expected Nielsen to have already been let go, but one former DHS official said that President Donald Trump’s emphasis on the formation of a caravan of Central American migrants forced the president to keep her on.

CNN reported earlier this month that Trump had warmed to Nielsen after being on the brink of firing her due to the rapport she built with him over the caravan, which the president focused heavily on leading up to the midterm elections.

John Sandweg, acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement from 2013 to 2014, told the Examiner that if Nielsen “was to leave, I wouldn’t be surprised if they named [U.S. Customs and Border Protection commissioner Kevin] McAleenan as Acting since he has already been Senate confirmed. Kevin would make a fantastic secretary and is one of the most competent people I have worked with."

Another former DHS official who worked in the agency during Trump's first year in office agreed that McAleenan is "a reasonable temporary fix," but added, "how long will it take to find and confirm the right person? And it would cause CBP to have to shift several people around to make up for the loss of its commissioner."
