The American people will decide the next president of the United States, and the Republican and Democratic parties might be surprised with whom they pick, says former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
"In the end, the American people are sovereign," the former history professor said Thursday on Fox News Channel's
"Hannity." "If they end up deciding they want Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders or Carly Fiorina, or they want a Dr. Carson, they're going to run right over the establishment."
Anyone who doesn't think an outsider can win doesn't know American history, he said. "In America, the people actually do decide in the end. Not money. Not media. The people. … I think you're seeing something historic."
Though experts say people such as Trump, Carson or Fiorina have no political experience, Gingrich noted that several states have elected governors without previous political experience, and they were successful.
On the Democratic side, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is surging largely because front-runner Hillary Clinton has been weakened by one negative story after another, while Sanders is running just as the "old left" gathers for "their last crusade."
"He's one of them," Gingrich said.
