Gingrich Makes Religion Key Campaign Issue

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has turned a local judge’s ruling on religion into a major part of his campaign, reports HumanEvents.com.

Gingrich demanded that U.S. District Judge Fred Biery of Texas step down after he ruled in May that high school students could not say prayers or make religious references during a graduation ceremony.

The school district is appealing the ruling, which threatened contempt-of-court charges for anyone who failed to follow it. Biery forbade the use of words including “prayer” and “amen.”

“I’m going to raise the banner that we don’t have to tolerate this level of anti-American activism by elitist judges,” Gingrich told Human Events. “Do you think an American judge should threaten high school administrators with going to jail for using the word ‘prayer’?”
