Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Friday that he agreed with President Donald Trump calling the mainstream media "fake news" because the press "is waging war on the Trump administration."

"The fake news is created by people like The Washington Post and The New York Times," the former Georgia Republican told Sean Hannity on Fox News. "They are waging war on the Trump administration.

"This is not just bias. This is not just slanted coverage.

"These people are at war with the very survival of the Trump administration."

He noted reports that large numbers of Obama administration staff supported Democrat Hillary Clinton in last year's election.

"Government employees who overwhelmingly voted for Hillary Clinton," he told Hannity. "We know, for example, that 99 percent of the campaign money donated by the State Department went to Hillary Clinton.

"Ninety-nine percent."

Gingrich added that the rollout of the Republican House plan to repeal and replace Obamacare on Monday was "a messy process" — and because of so much division, "you will see President Trump on the road in some key states campaigning to make the case.

"No question, this is better than Obamacare."
