Gingrich: Government Shutdown Poses 'Real Problem' for Dems

Shutting down the government over the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals could pose a "huge problem" for Democrats heading into the 2018 midterm elections, particularly in states carried in 2016 by President Donald Trump, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Tuesday.

"I think the Democrats have a huge problem" in states such as North Dakota, Montana, Indiana, Missouri, or West Virginia, which voted for Trump, Gingrich told Fox News' "America's Newsroom."

"You go there as a Democrat and say I closed the federal government, I closed the U.S. military, put us at risk over 600,000 people who came here illegally, because they mean so much to me, I was willing to sacrifice the safety of the country. Those are not states where that message will work very well."

Gingrich said he believes there will be enough votes Friday to keep the government open, as there is a great deal of push for a funding deal.

"When even The Washington Post writes an editorial and says take the deal to the Democrats. Look, the president is offering you a deal here – take it; there is a point where the country will be disgusted," Gingrich said.

He also suggested Trump encourage all of the dreamers in the United States to visit a Democrat's office to encourage them to work on a DACA deal that will work.

"The president is saying, 'I'll sign it if they agree to a deal,'" Gingrich said. "He is not blocking it; they're blocking it because they don't want to give him anything. If you're a Dreamer and told we can make your life legal except these clowns over here, the Democrats, won't agree to do anything, I think that's a pretty limited position for [Senate Majority Leader Chuck] Schumer and [House Minority Leader Nancy] Pelosi."

Gingrich also said he believes there will be a DACA agreement reached by the March deadline that has been set, as "everyone gets tired of it."

He also commented on the upcoming testimony from former Trump chief strategist Steve Bannon before the House Intelligence Committee.

"I think probably people are concerned about what happened during the transition," Gingrich said. "Bannon was there during the transition. He is a smart guy and he certainly knew a lot about dealing with the Russians and had been in the military and had a pretty good mind about these things, so I think it's just part of mopping up the whole thing."

Meanwhile, there is "no credible evidence of any kind from anyone that involves Donald Trump," Gingrich said. "This thing has been going on now over a year. Like a Lego machine, it just keeps moving, but it doesn't produce anything."
