The New York Times editorial board on Wednesday took over the @nytopinion Twitter account to state its opposition to the Republican tax bill in the Senate.

In a series of additional tweets, the board also posted the phone number of GOP senators who are reportedly still undecided on which way they will vote on the bill to urge readers to contact them, as well as details about how the plan would negatively affect the country.

The series of tweets followed an article the editorial board published on Tuesday in which it sharply criticized the GOP tax bill, saying "Republican senators have a choice. They can follow the will of their donors and vote to take money from the middle class and give it to the wealthiest people in the world. Or they can vote no, to protect the public and the financial health of the government. There's no compromise on that."

The editorial stressed that the Joint Committee and the Congressional Budget Office estimate that "People earning $40,000 to $50,000 would collectively lose $5.3 billion by paying more in taxes and receiving less in government spending in 2027 while millionaires would gain $5.8 billion.

The Senate Budget Committee on Tuesday approved the tax bill, which advanced it to the Senate floor, The Hill reported.
