NYT Reporter Overhears Ty Cobb Dishing About Russia Probe

By    |   Monday, 18 September 2017 10:47 AM EDT

White House lawyer Ty Cobb, who was brought in to oversee the response to the investigation into Russian election interference, was overheard discussing the case in a restaurant by a New York Times reporter.

Investigative reporter Kenneth Vogel said he heard Cobb's conversation with President Donald Trump's attorney John Dowd while having lunch at BLT Steak in Washington, D.C., located next door to the Times' local bureau. The two discussed White House counsel Donald F. McGahn II and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, as well as his meeting at Trump Tower.

"Mr. Cobb was heard talking about a White House lawyer he deemed 'a McGahn spy' and saying Mr. McGahn had 'a couple documents locked in a safe' that seemed to suggest he wanted access to. He also mentioned a colleague whom he blamed for 'some of these earlier leaks,' and who he said 'tried to push Jared out,'" according to Vogel and the Times' Peter Baker.

They also report that after the Times reached out to the White House about the incident, McGahn "privately erupted" Cobb, according to unnamed sources, who also said that White House chief of staff John F. Kelly "sharply reprimanded" Cobb for his carelessness.
