Former New Hampshire AG: Claims of Voter Fraud in Ayotte Senate Race 'Baseless'

Tom Rath, a former attorney general of New Hampshire, said Sunday that any claims that voter fraud cost former Sen. Kelly Ayotte her seat in the 2016 election were "baseless."

President Donald Trump during a meeting with senators last week charged that voter fraud cost him the win in New Hampshire and Ayotte her seat, Politico reported.

Ayotte, who worked for Trump as a Capitol Hill liaison during Judge Neil Gorsuch’s confirmation, lost by less than 1,000 votes to then-Gov. Maggie Hassan in November. One of her spokesmen told a local news outlet that Ayotte wasn’t so sure that she lost to Hassan because of voter fraud, saying it was "impossible to attribute the outcome to any factor."

Trump has made voter fraud claims on numerous occasions without providing evidence, and recently said Vice President Mike Pence would lead a commission to investigate those assertions. Trump won the electoral vote but lost the popular vote to Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton by nearly 3 million votes.

During his recent meeting with senators about Gorsuch, he said thousands of people were "brought in on buses" from Massachusetts to illegally vote in New Hampshire, a race he lost to Clinton by at least 3,000 votes.
