Now that former Sen. John E. Sununu has taken himself out of the running as a potential Republican Senate candidate from New Hampshire, the GOP primary is wide open and will likely be a heated affair,
reports The Hill.
One potential candidate, State Senate Majority Leader Jeb Bradley, has already hinted strongly that he’s seriously considering a run to challenge Democratic Sen. Jean Shaheen, but stressed that for the time being, he’s focused on the job voters sent him to the state house to do.
“There's a lot of speculation,” Bradley said.
“I can't deny that that's a fact, but as I keep repeating, day job comes first."
Bradley admits that he’s been in contact with Republican donors throughout the state, but said that he's “always talking to people all the time about the future of the Republican Party...and how we can turn things around in New Hampshire in 2014.”
Sununu’s departure from the race has also potentially opened the door for Rep. Frank Guinta to make a run for the seat, according to spokesman Mike Dennehy.
“Frank is considering all of his options equally, but he was received overwhelming encouragement from top Republicans and donors in New Hampshire to run for U.S. Senate,” Dennehy said.
Wealthy businessman and conservative activist Fred Tausch is another potential candidate who’s expected to make a decision by June.
The long shot in all of this is Scott Brown.
The former Republican senator from Massachusetts indicated he might be interested in a run. The fact that he'll be appearing at five events throughout the state over the next five months has created speculation that Brown may be attempting to garner support for a possible run.
